I heard a first-time tip from a burner I met over the weekend that canvas tents stay cool during the day and warm at night. He also said it kept the dust out like a charm. But, they are also much more expensive than the crappy nylon tent I already have. I am weighing the pros and cons of spending $350 on a new canvas tent. On one hand, I would love not to be forced out of bed and my tent every morning like clockwork at 9am from the insane heat when I just went to sleep 2 hours before. On the other hand, how much time do I really care to spend in my tent during the day when it feels much more burneresque to search for shade outside of my tent and see where I end up snoozing (last year, inside the human heart at 3:00 on the playa while people came in and out of it freely was my favorite).
So, your thoughts? Is a pricey canvas tent worth the comfort?

If you have the space to travel with it, the people to help lug it, set it up and take it down - me, as a single camper with extremely limited space during travel, it's totally impractical. And expensive.
They keep out dust, if you keep it shut down tight. Also keeps it kinda dark, though.
I rode out a duststorm in the heart. When you looked out the side, nothing but whiteout. When you looked up out the top ventricle, clear blue sky. It was neat.

in '08 we climbed the babylon tower during a dust storm, once we got to the top we looked over the edge and could see the white out below us it was amazing just chilling above the white out with very little wind
I agree with your thought of it being more "burneresque" to search for shade, more adventure. ...so if you do get one, and it is cooler, can we crash at your place?

Okay, screw canvas tents, I just bought a double wigwam for less than $150! SO excited and optomistic about it. Think it will keep dust out well, and planning on having my queen airmattress along with a lounge area and a changing/bathing area. Can't wait til it arrives to see if it fulfills my expectations.

You'll need better stakes than what comes with it. I use nails from home depot.. about a foot long or so and 1/2 inch diameter hammered into the playa at a slight angle. Also consider a guy line upgrade like the Nite-Ize figure 9 at REI or somesuch. Makes adjustments extra easy so you dont have to tie knots on playa.
The double is rather huge.. make sure you set it up once at home before hitting the playa as soon as possible in case of a manufacturing defect or somesuch. Would suck to find out you got the one bum tent the factory shipped that month after hitting the playa.
The double wigwam is a stretch version of the wigwam. It is longer and about twice as big as the regular wigwam. It also has 2 poles which give it a circus tent look. Which is cool. It does not come with shade or a fly or anything like that. An industrious person could make a beefier set of center poles and have a custom made shade cloth go over the top and do quite well I think.

Shade will have to be found elsewhere, but everyone's invited to chill and contribute pillows if it happens to be cool enough to hang out in there. I do have Rebar stakes I'm planning on using and I'm taking it out to Tahoe 4th of July weekend for a test-run. Thanks for all of the advice people!
I wound up with the triple since the single and double were sold out when I got the money in for the tent. I had the double for me and scrog last year and it held up fine. It was pitched at the ass end of group shade across from the "cuddle puddle".
I will have plenty of extra room so my tent can be used for emergency shelter for a dozen or so in case of major duststorm. I have room for tentsharing as well.. its very high and many can comfortably stand up inside. If someone has some net or shade big enuff they want to bring to coop in the tent that would be extra cool.
