So it's all about the water...don't leave camp without it and make sure you drink plenty while in camp! We all hear the stories about dehydration and I ran that edge a few times last year. My dear friend was kind enough to hand me a bottle and walk away before I bit his head off.
How much do you bring and how do you bring it?
We did about 2.5 gal each and had plenty to drink and clean up with some left over to gift. Most of it was in gallon jugs but those few bottles that fit in the cooler made for a quick cool off.
Cooler water can be emptied into the empty jugs for a quick foot bath or directly into a dish pan for a heavenly afternoon soak.
yes water is a must...i went out thursday night with 13 others and we ended up on the whole other side off the city at opulent temple and danced the night away till the water ran out, lucky for us we did find a camp not far from there that gave us some water.... never know whats gonna happen out there and always take more water then you think youll need as your little trip might trun in to an all night journey to the other side

all i gotta say about water is.... PLEASE DON'T TAKE WITHOUT ASKING!!!! I will gladly share water with you if you need it but for some odd reason a bunch of mine walked off this year.
"Those who say something is impossible, should get out of the way of those who are doing it." Old Chines Proverb
For 3 of us we brought 21 gallons. I forget how much we wound up using, but I do know we didn't even use half of it. That's including dish water and all by the way. One thing that helped with the water was buying a block of ice and putting it in the water cooler. We did that twice. We didn't shower and I don't think I'm gonna next year either. Even at home I don't shower everyday, so no big deal for me. I know Sara wanted to shower, and found one, though I think she would have liked to take more showers. So, even though we went overkill with the water, I believe we're gonna continue that trend.......better overkill than underkill. I was very dehydrated out on the playa one night and was about to faint, but that was mostly drug induced and will not happen next year. Kids, don't do drugs.....drugs are bad, mmkay?
I always budget 2 gallons of water a day and I too usually have a bunch left over. I prefer having a buffer and the ability to gift out water if someone runs out. I do use my clean cooler melt for showering so that cuts down on fresh water consumption. I always use the 5 gallon water dispenser type jugs but I think for nearly everyone else the little square plastic suitcase waters work best. Water jugs in the corners of the tent holds it down really well and can even add some cooling effect in the morning.

I don't sip, or drink, water. I pound it down, guzzle until my belly feels full.
I never leave camp without a full 24 oz. container. Before I leave camp, I pound some (see above) and refill.
I am never shy about asking for water when I am out and about, and never hesitate to give water to any who ask.
15 gal for the week seems to do for me.
I have a bit of a dilemma this year. I can't haul 15 gal. of water on my bike. I have to make some contigency plan, with a friend bringing some that I can go pick up, bartering labor or cigarettes or whatever, or...
I have a 50-gal water barrel with a hand pump. Works great, used it a number of times before. If there is someone in the Seattle area that can haul it down and back, all I need is my 15 gallons from it, the rest can stand as a camp supply for gifting and those who might run short.
I use 2+ gals a day. I load up the 3Litre camelbak with ice and water after drinking a bunch with emergenc at the start of the day. When working I have used 9 litres a day on the playa, another 3 at night. Watch your piss for color and try to piss as clear as possible by afternoon/evening. If you dont piss clear at night or the next morning find someone to help you increase your hydration. Do not go for more than one day with dark pee, seriously.. just ask someone to help ya drink a shitload down. Sometimes just hydrating can be hard on the playa. Everyone is different but for virgins watch yourself the first day or two. Also try to hydrate like a mofo for the weeks before the burn, get used to suckin down loads of h2o before you even get there.

That's actually probably a good idea, I know I don't drink enough water as it is, I think getting used to drinking enough will be harder than most any other exercise!
It's generally considered a d-bag move to fill containers up or top them off in NV. While it doesn't seem like it to us, water is a limited resource in the area. Take a few thousand assholes all grabbing a liter or three out of the taps and you get a larger load on the system. You get the picture...
With that said, just about every freaking chain store, gas station, fast food place, and hobo on the street has pallets of bottled water in every size you would want for sale.

Just a little tip, after you finish off one of those 2.5 gallon suitcases, you can cut it in half, the long way. Then use one of the halfs as a foot bath

Water is relatively cheap. I found it was best to bring too much, and then as I left the extra (along with some firewater) with the folks who will spend the next month cleaning up the shit others left behind.
Dihydrogen monoxide is it in you? drink water, then drink some more, drink until you can see your piss no more, which means piss clear. If you pee clear, you are well hydrated, if you piss yellow, drink some water or wave bye to the vitamins you just pissed out. If you pee tea colored or darker, go to the med tent, STAT! you are severly dehydrated and inturn you are doing damage to your kidneys. That is your hydration health safety information tidbit for the day.
i like your thinking... i'll go a bit farther... if the human body is 98% water.... as long as i keep my mouth on someone that is well hydrated then osmosis should take care of me.... no?

But water isn't enough. Newbies need to know to dring electrolytes and lots of them, in the form of packets, coconut water, or my personal favorite, gatorade. I use the burn for my yearly excuse to eat poptarts every day for breakfast, beef jerky for dinner, and as much gatorade as I want.
Also, the beginner's guide on the website says 1 1/2 gallons per person per day which is way too much. I don't think you can drink more than 1/2 gallon a day, and I couldn't find any takers for my many extra jugs of water last year so my friend had to practically sit on top of them on the car ride home.
ok.. ill chime in... i drink a gallon a day EASY. i do add powdered gatorade to it though. typicaly i roll like this: 3 bottles at all times. 1 water 1 gatorade 1 jameson i NEVER leave camp without at least these 3 items. unless im running... then i loose the jameson... i know im a pussy.
I drink a gallon a day easy IRL, not even on the playa.
1.5 gallons is not just for drinking, there's coffee making, cooking, teeth brushing, whatever.
I'm going to use Vitalyte (http://playabound.wordpress.com/2010/04/14/1000/#respond), rather than Gatorade (whose reputation exceeds actual quality, I believe).
Good GOD I drank so much coconut water last year, I can hardly stand to look at it now. Malibu is muuuuch better.
...also make sure your feet are in good repair and start riding your bike a little bit if you don't already. your feet and ass will thank you!
YES! Slather those puppies up with Vaseline and keep them covered with socks and boots at all times! Wish you could do the same with your hands. Got the gnarliest hangnails last year. All kinds of shredded skin all around the nail. I guess you could wear gloves, but that's just not cool at all, is it? Good times!
